A Banarasi sari is one made in Varanasi, commonly known as Benares, a historic city (Banaras). The saris are famed for their gold and silver brocade or zari, quality silk, and lavish embroidery, and are among India's finest. Mughal designs such as amru, ambi, and Domak, as well as beautiful floral and foliage motifs such as kalga and bel, will be seen on genuine Banarasi sarees. They now have their own GI protection to distinguish genuine items made by Uttar Pradesh weavers from fakes made in China, Surat, or elsewhere.
