Clay doll making is a 200–250-year-old skill that is primarily practised West Bengal's Ghurni area. Clay dolls usually depict regular Bengali men and women at work. Through the talent and knowledge of the maker, these dolls portray a realistic picture of numerous emotions and items.

The clay dolls of West Bengal are known for their accurate depictions of regular village life, including fishing, basket making, cooking, cleaning, worshipping, fruits, vegetables, birds, and animals. For over five generations, they have been a part of the native potters' tradition.
